Rescue, breathe

The quiet hour
seagulls are hungry
waves are breaking
under their own
froth of saliva

We walk
hand in hand
drawing behind
us the years we spent
together on the sand
of the Adriatic

Our love seems
a long succession
of moments
the glow
and the sorrow
are gone

You say
‘Take a stand’
I say
‘Understand’

Naked past
conversations
merge into
a soundless
undercurrent
of memories

You say
‘Show me
your teeth’
I say
‘Breathe’
